Changing World Order

The world as we know it is changing; this began during the Corona pandemic and has been amplified by the Second term election of Donald Trump. Alliances are being questioned. Many allies ask if the US can still be relied upon. The current world order took its form majorly after the Second World War which was an event most of the world took part in or was affected in one way or the order. It was then solidified after the Cold War.

Donald Trump's second presidency should have been no surprise because he had already served a term and the world knows what to expect. I think what caused the shake-up is the nature of the victory which he had which made him more emboldened. He defeated Kamala Harris in all seven swing states and this alone makes it feel like he won the election with a high margin which might not be the case. His Republican Party controls both chambers of Congress; this is an added advantage for any President before the midterm elections. He also this time won the popular vote which meant he won votes from different sections of the society. These like I said embolden him to carry out most of the plans that he has and this we see in the type and amount of executive orders he has signed so far.

After the announcement of Trump's victory, significant events happened and one will not be wrong to say they were influenced by his victory. Two that come to mind are, first the collapse of the German coalition government and second, the call for a snap election by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Trump has been in office for close to a month and he is already shaping and changing the world's political climate. He has indirectly given support to the right-lining politics in places such as Israel and Germany and has also influenced company culture, for after his victory we saw companies such as Meta (Facebook) rolling back some of the policies that were put in place during the Biden era. It also appears that Trump has an issue with Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) and this was more pronounced during his briefing of the terrible Plane crash in Washington DC that happened early into his presidency.

Trump has suggested that the Palestinians be resettled in order for Gaza to be rebuilt. This was not welcomed by those affected by the current fighting like Jordan and Egypt where he plans to send the displaced Palestinians. Some have said it is a form of ethnic cleansing, but this has been welcomed by the far right in Israel.

One can also not forget how he is using tariffs as a bargaining chip and this he did when he first announced tariffs on goods from Canada, Mexico, and China, though he withdrew that of Canada and Mexico when they agreed to do more to secure the shared border with the US. Later came tariffs on Steel and Aluminum, he is also planning to impose equal tariffs on countries that have tariffs on American goods. All these questions and also rewrite the rules of World Trade.

Most recently he is negotiating the End of the war in Ukraine which was one of his campaign promises. It is no secret the admiration Trump has for Putin and his recent call to him to start the negotiation for the end of the war in Ukraine has not been welcomed by his allies especially the Europeans who feel they are being sidelined and it seems he is also not carrying Ukraine along, this does not go down to well and one could see the reaction at the just concluded Munich Security Conference. This has made Europe rethink her security for she has long been reliant on the US and has not invested so much in her own security and this is an issue for Trump who feels they are reaping the US off.

This weekend is the elections in Germany. The political landscape here is also changing for we see the strengthening of the far-right party AfD who according to polls are in second place. Whatever happens, we all hope for the best in this ever-changing world.

Thanks for stopping by.
