Basketball

Basketball was one sport that I always admired from afar, but I gave myself funny excuses as to why it was not for me, and I will say that was because I did not get enough exposure to understand the game. There was a basketball court around where I lived. It was not within walking distance. This made my parents reluctant to support my playing the game. They had safety concerns.

As someone who is on the tall side, most people expected me to play basketball when I was young, but I guess my height didn't go to waste, as I was good at volleyball, which is also a sport where height is an advantage. However, I have since realized that you don't necessarily need to be tall to be good at basketball; being tall just gives you an advantage.

This year, I wanted to try a new sport, and basketball was on my list, but as a spoiler, next year it will be golf.

I was fortunate to have a friend who played basketball regularly, which helped to keep my motivation alive. Also still at the university, I took advantage of the basic course offered by the university, which was really helpful.

Around the time I started playing, the European Basketball Cup was taking place, and my home country, Germany, won. It was great to be part of this moment in the country's basketball history, and it made me love the game even more. I think the national basketball team captain, Dennis Schröder, is a great ambassador for the sport and deserves to be inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame.

I now play in a club twice a week, and I love how much I'm improving as a player. My love for the game is growing too.

Basketball is, of course, one of those sports that makes you feel cool. It's definitely a cool sport, and I encourage everyone to try it.

God bless America.
